Submitting A Proposal

Call for Panels, Papers and Posters

Despite international conventions to protect cultural property during times of armed conflict, during the last 25 years archaeological and cultural heritage has increasingly become a target or at least heavily damaged or affected as "collateral damage".

This international conference addresses the multiple ways in which archaeological/cultural heritage and war have interfaced that raises a whole host of important and interesting legal, moral, and ethical questions:

  • What roles should scholars - archaeologists and cultural heritage professional - play during times of war/armed conflict?
  • What are some of the ethical, historical, and practical dilemmas and how have people resolved these issues?
  • How can the experience of past conflicts guide future behavior?

Participants are encouraged to submit proposals for panels (with 4-5 papers) individual papers and posters. We welcome proposals from people in a variety of disciplines from all over the world to participate in this ongoing and complex debate.

Some of the topics that will be covered include:

  • International law, war and antiquities/cultural property
  • Archaeology and recent wars (in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Balkans and
  • War and "cultural cleansing"
  • Unconventional war and archaeology
  • Scholars and the military, police, security and law enforcement
  • The duty of archaeologist during times of war
  • The illicit market in antiquities and scholars expertise
  • The illicit market in antiquities and organized crime
  • Reclaiming cultural property
  • The archaeology of "archaeology in conflict"

Information on submitting a proposal:

  • Your proposal for a panel should be no longer than 500 words.
  • Your proposal on a paper or poster should be no longer than 250
  • Your proposal should contain your contact information (incl. your
    academic/institutional affiliation).
